Snatch Recovery Calculations: Choosing the Right Strap for Your Truck or 4x4
A snatch strap must have a Minimum Breaking Strength (MBS) equivalent to 2 to 3 times the weight of the lightest vehicle involved in the recovery process.
Example Calculation for Trucks & 4x4s:
- If your bogged truck weighs 22 tonnes, and you’re using another 22-tonne truck for recovery, the required snatch strap should have an MBS ranging from 44 tonnes to 66 tonnes (2-3 times the lightest vehicle).
- For 4x4 vehicles, if your SUV weighs 3 tonnes, you’ll need a strap with an MBS of 6 to 9 tonnes (2-3 times the lightest vehicle).
- The severity of the bogging also affects recovery strength—a truck or 4WD stuck in deep mud requires significantly more force due to the suction effect.
